Debra Griego’s story is a heartbreaking example of the challenges faced by many people experiencing homelessness in Albuquerque. Despite her age, health issues, and financial struggles, Debra has been unable to secure stable housing for almost a year.

Living in a tent near the highway, Debra faces daily dangers and uncertainties. Yet, when I met with her, I found that she remains resilient and compassionate, helping others in similar situations whenever she can.

Debra’s case highlights the urgent need for increased resources and support for those experiencing homelessness in our city. The lack of affordable housing, coupled with bureaucratic hurdles and limited assistance programs, leaves many individuals trapped in a cycle of poverty and instability, struggling to navigate a system that isn’t really built with their needs in mind, or the barriers they must overcome.

What can we do?

Debra’s story is a call to action. We must work together to address the root causes of homelessness and provide comprehensive support to those in need. This includes:

  • Increasing the availability of affordable housing: We need to invest in building and preserving affordable housing units to ensure that everyone has a safe and stable place to call home.
  • Expanding access to support services: This includes mental health care, addiction treatment, and job training programs.
  • Streamlining the process for obtaining housing assistance: We need to make it easier for people to access the resources they need to get back on their feet.

Above all, the existing support systems need to be made more accessible to the people they purport to serve.

How can you help?

  • Donate: Your financial contributions can help us provide essential services to those experiencing homelessness.
  • Volunteer: We rely on volunteers to help with a variety of tasks, such as serving meals, providing transportation, and offering companionship.
  • Advocate: Speak out about the need for increased resources and support for those experiencing homelessness.

Together, we can make a difference in the lives of people like Debra and create a more just and compassionate community for all.
